Cardboard box
Loop Crate for The Fishing Industry
The 昀椀shing industry in Greenland needs a 5 kg
box that can withstand tough handling when
frozen catches are packed, often before the boats
have even returned from sea. Until now, the range
of available solutions has consisted of a single
option: a cardboard box with an internal PE lining,
that is, a plastic layer inside the box.
Another example is Loop, which derives its name
from being reused after use and addresses a
future where plastic products are required to be
reused repeatedly. Loop is used for packing and
transporting 昀椀sh. The loop is created by BEWI
ASA and operated by BEWI Norway.
However, Royal Greenland has taken a visionary
step and entered into an agreement with STOK
to use a new type of 5 kg box made entirely of
paperboard, without an internal PE layer.
The box was developed by STOK in collaboration
with colleagues in Norway and the Netherlands.
By choosing a 5 kg box made of pure paperboard,
Royal Greenland gains access to a more
sustainable alternative to what has been the
standard solution in Greenland until now.
While the industry itself did not request this inno‑
vation, STOK has gained a foothold in the mar‑
ket with the alternative product because Royal
Greenland saw the potential in a box without a
PE lining. In doing so, Royal Greenland has gone
against the tide. They have ended their collabora‑
tion with their long‑standing supplier and instead
entered into an agreement with STOK—thereby
gaining access to a unique, forward‑looking prod‑
uct.
The box is recyclable in relevant waste manage‑
ment systems, subject to local collection, sorting,
and recycling practices. Approximately 13% virgin
昀椀bre is used per box, with the remaining material
consisting of recycled 昀椀bre. STOK expects annual
usage to reach around four million boxes, cor‑
responding to approximately 20,000 tonnes of
recycled 昀椀bre‑based material.

Crates of this type would normally be discard‑
ed after use, but Loop operates within a closed
system. As a result, the crates can be washed
and reused multiple times, enabling repeated use
compared to single‑use alternatives.
The Loop concept has evolved over time and
builds on a combination of industry practices, sup‑
plier inputs and developments originating within
the BEWI Group, including the carved out BEWI
Food (= BEWI in this report). The solution as it is
applied today is developed and operated by BEWI
as a closed‑loop system for reusable transport
packaging. Through this setup, the solution sup‑
ports considerations related to resource ef昀椀ciency
and packaging choices, without presuming quan‑
ti昀椀ed climate effects at this stage.
For BEWI, the objective is to be prepared for
future requirements. If single‑use plastic pack‑
aging were to be prohibited at some point, BEWI
would still offer a functioning and scalable solu‑
tion through the Loop concept. In parallel, BEWI
collaborates closely with its main supplier of
barrier packaging for the food industry. Through
this collaboration, work is underway to intro‑
duce recyclable vacuum 昀椀lm for the 昀椀sh and food
industries across Europe. The solutions are being
implemented in Norway, and BEWI has entered
into agreements for test runs with customers who
request recyclable solutions.
